There are many threats lurking on the internet today.  Viruses, spyware and hackers can wreck havoc on an unprotected computer system.  Learning to avoid these hazards has become a necessity.

If you suspect your system is infected or security has been breached, please call us for help or advice.  In fact, call us before experiencing problems and we will configure your system to help prevent threats in advance.   Planning, caution and preparation can go a long way and save you money and headaches later on.

Viruses

A computer virus/trojan/worm can cause serious damage and should be removed immediately.  Signs of infection vary greatly and detection is usually determined through anti-virus software.

Spyware

Spyware problems range from tracking internet activity to installing harmful programs known as 'malware' and sometimes trojans or worms.  Signs of spyware infection include: A) Your computer is running slower than usual, B) Your browser homepage is being re-directed elsewhere, and C) Pop-up adds appear in abundance whenever you're online. - Spyware threats have grown substantially in the last couple years.

Hackers

If a computer is not protected by a firewall, a hacker could gain control of your system.  Once this happens, they might use your computer resources for themselves or even worse, they could steal and exploit valuable information.  Don't let them do this!

HOW TO AVOID SPYWARE, VIRUSES AND HACKERS

Do not click 'OK' on pop-up windows without first reading them thoroughly.  In particular, avoid pop-ups announcing free prizes, trivia contests, offers to scan your pc and similar messages.  They can be lures taking you to websites that may download spyware onto your computer.
Never open spam e-mail, no matter how innocent or harmless it appears.
Avoid aimless surfing on the internet.  Clicking on search engine results can take you to harmful websites.  It's better to stick with brand name sites of major banks, retailers, etc, as they are more trustworthy.
You should pay for software instead of opting for the free, advertising supported version, which often contains spyware.
Never click on links in e-mail you receive from an unknown source. Type the URL into your Web browser instead when necessary.  Links in email can be disguised and might re-direct you to alternate, possibly dangerous sites.
Do not open e-mail attachments from an unknown source.  They could contain viruses and/or spyware which would quickly infect your computer.
Use a firewall to help prevent any unauthorized computer activity.
Run a weekly, full system anti-virus computer scan.  Update your anti-virus software regularly and enable it to run in the background as well (also known as "Real-Time" scanning).
Update and run Anti-Spyware programs weekly such as Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy to detect and remove spyware.
